Utilize Moldex3D to Simulate Parting Surface Heating

In injection molding process, higher temperature on the parting surface will lead to better product surface quality. Induction heating is a technique to locally heat cavity surface before every shot. Moldex3D R13.0 is able to simulate parting surface heating. Users can choose the core side, cavity side or both as the heating targets depending on their requirements. When the parting surface heating is included in the simulation, the temperature analysis results will be more consistent with the reality.

The example below shows the general steps to apply parting surface heating in mold filling analysis.

Step 1.  Prepare a part with solid mesh established, and choose either core side, cavity side or both as the heating targets. In this example, only the area attached to the core side of the part will be heated (the area inside the dotted lines as shown below).


Step 2. Generate solid mesh layers as the region of mold plate heated by induction or other methods (5 layers or more are suggested). Set the attribute as mold insert.


Step 3. When setting the process parameters in Process Wizard, click Mold Insert Initial Temperature under the Cooling Settings tab.


Step 4. Specify the initial temperature for each molding cycle. Be sure to select Induction heating under Setting type so that the initial temperature will be applied in every cycle instead of only the first cycle. Click OK to apply.


Step 5. In the analysis sequence setting, be sure to select Transient analysis (with Ct), otherwise the initial temperature will not be applied. Click Run now to start analyzing.


After the analysis, it can be observed that in the cooling results the temperature around the core is higher at the beginning of filling.
