A FILLING BEHAVIOR STUDY IN RESIN TRANSFER MOLDING PROCESS THROUGH 3D SIMULATION AND EXPERIMENTAL VISUALIZATION
Monday, April 28th, 10:30 AM│M11 Fundamentals & Fellows Forum
This study focuses on the filling behavior of resin transfer molding (RTM) process. By the visualization system, the flow patterns of resin during transfer molding were observed and the data were used to estimate the permeability tensor. In addition three-dimensional simulation were used to predict the filling behavior in thickness direction and the edge effect of the RTM process. The comparison between simulation and experiment result shows the capability of 3D numerical simulation on the filling behavior of the RTM process. The simulation tool would be helpful to obtain the optimal operating condition to reduce the trial-and-error time and materials.

PROGRESS ON FIBER CONCENTRATION FOR INJECTION MOLDING SIMULATION OF FIBER REINFORCED THERMOPLASTICS
Monday, April 28th, 3:30 PM│M33 Injection Molding Simulation

Mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic products have a deep dependence upon flowinduced variations in fiber structure, involving fiber orientation, fiber length, and fiber concentration. However, fewnumerical studies have been done on fiber concentration to date. Using the suspension balance model of particle migration, the objective of this work is to perform the concentration calculation in mold filling of a center-gated disk. Consequently, the predicted concentration distribution of short glass fiber filled polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) with an average volume fraction of 0.177, through the thickness measured at the lubrication region of the disk, agrees well with related experimental results.

THE STUDY OF DYNAMIC BEHAVIORS AND OPTICAL QUALITY FOR FISHEYE LENS USING INJECTION COMPRESSION MOLDING
Monday, April 28th, 4:00 PM│M33 Injection Molding Simulation
Injection compression molding (ICM) process can bring a lot of advantages to enhance the product quality. Meanwhile, ICM also introduces more parameters increasing the complexity of molding. In this study, conventional injection molding (CIM) and ICM processes on the fisheye lens development through numerical simulation are compared. Results show that ICM process can provide better geometrical shape accuracy, and better optical properties with lower retardation and fringe order. Furthermore, we also examine various compression gap and compression speed effects on geometrical shape accuracy and optical quality. It shows that different compression gap and compression speed have no significant effect on geometrical shape accuracy control. However, under constant compression speed, if the compression gap is too large, optical property will become worse.

PREDICTION OF POWDER CONCENTRATION FOR FILLING SIMULATION OF METAL INJECTION MOLDING
Monday, April 28th, 4:30 PM│M33 Injection Molding Simulation
A full 3D finite volume analysis system has been developed to simulate a Metal Injection Molding (MIM) filling process. In the MIM industry, the so-called black lines are frequently observed in the surface inspection of the final sintering products. Such a critical appearance defect is attributed to powder-binder phase separation. Powder concentration is used as an indicator for phase separation. In this work, it is necessary to numerically predict the powder concentration distribution during mold filling and discuss the phase separation issue.

SIMULATION ON WARPAGE AND ITS MECHANISM IN CO-INJECTION MOLDING
Wednesday, April 30th, 3:30 PM│W16 Injection Molding Process Control II
With the growing use of co-injection molding process, it becomes essential to understand skin/core material distribution in the cavity for ensuring the quality of final product. In this study, warpage issue will be examined numerically and systematically by process effect and material combination in sequential co-injection development. Specifically, decreasing melt temperature or slowing down flow rate of 1st shot, which makes frozen layer thicker, can improve warpage problem. When the frozen layer is thicker, the core layer is more difficult to penetrate through the thickness direction. Thus, the melt is squeezed to advance in the flow direction, that forces melt go farther and better packing effect can be implemented accordingly. However, warpage becomes worse due to two used different materials with distinct properties mismatching while processing co-injection. To validate our simulation investigation, the experimental study will be performed in the near coming future.
